This second in Bemelmans' Madeline series was awarded the 1954 Caldecott Medal for illustration of another adventure for "twelve little girls in two straight lines". This time Madeline is saved from drowning by a dog they adopt and name Genevieve with much ado and the horror of the board of trustees.
