Born and raised on the Yankton Sioux Reservation, Zitkala-Sa listened to tales told by Native American storytellers in both North and South Dakota, finding various versions, each supplying some lost link to the original. In her words: "And now I have tried to transplant the native spirit of these tales into the English language, since America in the last few centuries has acquired a second tongue."
