The Battle of Fort Sumter, the first battle of the American Civil War, took place on April 12 and 13, 1861. Although there were no casualties during the engagement, one Union artillerist was killed and three were wounded when a cannon fired prematurely when firing a salute during the federal evacuation on April 14; 8vo; [3]-35, [36] pages.
