Brewster is a ten-year-old boy who has never left his small town in Oregon. His mother died when he was young, and his father, who works at the post office, is always busy. So, Brewster spends most of his time reading books from the library. One day, a girl from town, Tish, comes to the library and asks for a book on how to be a better person. Brewster recommends a book to her and she takes it home. Brewster has never talked to a girl before, so he is curious about what she is like. Tish is kind, funny, and interesting, and she invites Brewster to come over to her house to play video games. Brewster is hesitant at first, but he eventually decides to go over.
