In 1814, the year of the Waterloo campaign, a young, ambitious theater manager named Richard Brinsley Sheridan was unimpressed with the new playhouse in London, the Theatre Royal. So Sheridan decided to mount his own production of William Shakespeare's play, The Rivals, there. The production was a smashing success and Sheridan was hailed as a genius. Unfortunately, the theatrical world was not as pleased, and the play was quickly forgotten. But Sheridan's gamble paid off, and the Theatre Royal became his most famous stage.
