William Henry Belk, known as the Merchant of the South, was born in 1811 in Prince Edward County, Virginia. After serving in the War of 1812, Belk moved to Columbia, Mississippi, where he opened a store. He became one of the wealthiest men in the state and played a significant role in developing the economy of Mississippi. Belk died in 1884.; 8vo; 269 pages.
