This psychological thriller into the world of espionage and secrets of the heart is a startling departure from the usual for McEwan. The story is based on the actual (but little known) secret tunnel under the Soviet sector of Cold War Berlin which the British and Americans built in 1954 to gain access to the Russians' communication system.
