In Latecomers, Anita Brookner tells the story of four generations of women who all live in the same house but have very different recollections of the events that led to their being there. The first generation is made up of the mother and her two daughters. The mother remembers a happy home life with her husband and two children, but the daughters remember a contentious and often abusive family. The second generation is made up of the daughters and their daughters. Again, the daughters remember a different family to their mothers, one in which their father was absent and their mother was often overwhelmed by the demands of her work. The third generation is made up of the granddaughters and their daughters. The daughters in this generation remember their mothers as strong, independent women who raised them to be strong, independent women themselves. The fourth generation is made up of the granddaughters and their mothers. The mothers in this generation remember a different family to their daughters, one in which their husbands were present and; 8vo.
