The Lotus and the Wind is a story of a young girl named Lotus who is taken away from her home in China and brought to Japan to be a concubine of the Emperor. Lotus is a bright, beautiful girl who is quick to learn and loves to tell stories. She quickly befriends a courtesan named Wind who teaches her about the customs of Japan and how to be a proper concubine. Lotus is happy in Japan, but she longs for her home and family. One day, a messenger arrives from China with news that her family has been killed and she is to return to them. Lotus is reluctant to leave, but she knows that she must go back and face the danger that awaits her. She is also worried about how she will be able to return home after she has been away for so long. When she arrives in China, she is met by her family and they are overjoyed to see her. Lotus is finally able to return home and she is; 8vo; 287 pages.
