On a bleak Scottish moor, the Ramsay brothers are out herding their cattle when they spot a carriage coming down the road. The driver, a kindly Englishman, tells them there has been an accident, and the three passengers - a young woman and her two children - have been taken to the nearest hospital.

The Ramseys, led by the youngest brother, Jamie, set out on foot to find the injured woman and her children. Along the way, they are met by a rugged Scottish farmer, Mr. MacNaughtan, who tells them he has seen the woman and her children taken into the town.

The Ramseys enter the town, only to find it in flames. They are finally led to the hospital, where they find the woman and her children dead. The youngest Ramsay, now a grown man, has to face the consequences of his quest.; 8vo; 319 pages.
