The Mixquiahuala Letters tells the story of two young women, Margarita and Estefanía, who are forced to flee their homes in the aftermath of the Mexican Revolution. Traveling through remote parts of Mexico, the sisters are joined by a group of other refugees, including an aristocrat, a priest, and a bandit. The group is constantly on the run from the Mexican military and the various gangs that populate the country. In the letter-writing exchanges that make up the book, the sisters share their experiences and observations of the country and the people they encounter.
