When Greg Sarris's mother dies, he and his sister move to their father's house in the middle of nowhere, where they spend their summers picking watermelons. At first, the boys are bored and the girls are bossy, but they soon learn to enjoy each other's company and the quiet, peaceful days. One evening, they hear a strange noise and investigate, finding a group of boys playing with fire. The next day, the boys are gone and the girls find a dead animal. They start to worry, but their fears are unfounded. One night, after the adults have gone to bed, the girls hear a noise outside and go to investigate. They find a group of boys hiding in the bushes, and one of them is carrying a gun. The girls run back to the house and tell their father, who comes out and arrests the boys.; 8vo.
