As a teenager in Maine in 1855, John Mead Gould initiated a daily journal that he continued for more than fifty years. Five of the sixteen volumes cover his eventful Civil War experiences. Gould recorded details about army life, people, places and combat, often including delightful sketches of people and incidents. He regularly mailed several of the blue onionskin pages to a friend who carefully preserved them all until after the war.

Gould was associated with The 1st Maine, The 10the Maine and The 29th Maine. Maps, two Appendices and Index ; Army of the Potomac Series; 4to.
