Lewis Wilmarth Sheldon was born in 1859 in Ohio to missionary parents. He attended Oberlin College and then went on to Princeton University, where he studied mathematics and philosophy. Sheldon eventually became a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, where he taught until his death in 1941.
