When nine-year-old Dubliner, Niamh, learns her mother has died, she is sent to live with her father in a small town in Ireland. Niamh is not happy about the change, as she misses her mother dearly. Niamh's father is a writer and he is working on a new novel. Niamh is not allowed to read the book, but she is allowed to listen to it when he reads it to her. One night, Niamh finds a key to the bookcase and she accidentally reads the book. She is horrified by the content and decides to tell her father what she has read.
