Alice Hoffman's Illumination Night tells the story of twin sisters, Gertie and Frieda, who are separated at birth and never meet. As adults, Frieda moves to the city and becomes an artist, while Gertie remains in the small town where they were born. One evening, Frieda goes out to a gallery show and doesn't return home. Gertie begins to worry and eventually goes to the gallery to look for her sister. There, she meets a mysterious man who tells her that her sister is safe and has gone away to find herself.
