After the death of his wife, John Katzenbach returns to his childhood home to care for his ailing father. The townspeople of his boyhood are all gone, but John finds comfort in his old friends. One of these friends, a priest, suggests that John contact a medium to help him deal with his grief. John is hesitant at first, but he eventually decides to go through with it.

The medium tells John that his wife is still with him, and that she is unhappy. John is confused and frustrated by the medium's messages, but eventually he decides to follow them. He learns that his wife had an affair and that she was planning to leave him. John is devastated by the news, but he decides to go through with the divorce.

The day of the divorce, John's father dies. John is devastated by the loss, but he decides to go through with the funeral. He attends the funeral and then drives away from the cemetery.; 8vo; FSA.
