Taylor, himself a naval officer and veteran of World War II, has fashioned an inspirational and highly readable narrative of Nimitz’s life and achievements.

Nimitz was born in 1885 in a small town on the Hawaiian island of Kaua’i. He entered the U.S. Naval Academy in 1903 and quickly distinguished himself as a daring and talented officer. During World War I, he served on the destroyer USS Memphis and distinguished himself in combat against the German fleet. After the war, Nimitz served on the staff of the Commander in Chief, Pacific Fleet.

In 1935, Nimitz became captain of the battleship USS Arizona, which was involved in the Pearl Harbor attack. After the attack, Nimitz led the ship in its famous rescue of; 8vo; 364 pages.
