Defoe was born on April 23, 1661 in the city of London, England. He was the son of a barber and a dressmaker. As a child, he was homeless and often slept in the open. He became a pickpocket and thief, and also found work as a servant. In 1684, he married a woman named Mary Fenton. The couple had six children. In 1709, Defoe published his first book, Robinson Crusoe. He died on November 30, 1731.; 8vo ; 377 pages.
