The Man Without a Country is the compelling, ultimately heartbreaking story of Edward Everett Hale, an American author and patriot who, in 1852, was forced to flee his native country after being accused of treason. Hale was forced to abandon his wife, children, and home, and spent the next twelve years living in exile in England, France, and Italy. Eventually, he was allowed to return to the United States, where he died in 1892. My Double is the story of Hale's alter ego, Frederick Fairfield, a young man who, like Hale, is exiled from his home country. While Fairfield is forced to confront the challenges of life in a new country, he also struggles with the guilt of his double identity. These two stories converge in the final pages of the book, as Fairfield comes to terms with his own identity and the legacy of Hale.
