When a hurricane destroys the family home of twins Max and Marianne and their parents are killed, the children are shipped off to live with relatives in a remote Florida Keys island. Max, the more outgoing of the twins, is the natural leader and takes charge of organizing the daily lives of the eleven children. The other twin, Marianne, is a loner who spends her time reading, drawing, and dreaming. When the island is visited by a group of juvenile delinquents, Marianne is the only one who notices their strange behavior and suspects they may be up to no good. She is right, and the delinquents steal all the food from the island's store.
