William Bentinck and William III (Prince of Orange) : the Life of Bentinck Earl of Portland from the Welbeck Correspondence is the story of a powerful, influential, and controversial figure in seventeenth-century British history. Bentinck was the son of the first Duke of Portland, and he served as a soldier and diplomat during the reigns of James I and Charles I. He became the first Earl of Portland in 1689, and he served as the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and the Governor of the Province of New York. Bentinck was a major player in the Anglo-Dutch Wars of the 17th century, and he was known for his strong support of the Protestant cause.
