Son of the Gamblin' Man: the Youth of an Artist tells the story of Mari Sandoz's childhood in the small town of Saint-Georges, Quebec, in the 1920s and 30s. The author's father was an artist, and Mari and her family were very poor. They struggled to make ends meet, but Mari's father never let them feel sorry for themselves. He always encouraged his daughter to be creative and to pursue her dreams. Mari enjoyed drawing and painting, and even though she wasn't very good at first, she kept practicing and eventually became a very talented artist. Her father was a great encouragement to her, and he always encouraged her to pursue her dreams. Mari's life changed in the 1940s when she met and married Yves. Yves was a pacifist and a member of the Communist party, and he was arrested during the Second World War. Mari and Yves were forced to flee Saint-Georges and move to Mexico City; 8vo; 333 pages.
