The Principato is McHale's third novel, following 2004's The Woman Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest and 2007's The Glass Castle. It tells the story of a young family in the fictional Principato, Italy, in the early 1960s. The father, an American expatriate, is struggling to create a new life for his family while the mother, a staunch Italian nationalist, tries to hold the family together. The children must deal with the confusion and violence of the era, as well as their own growing individuality. McHale's lyrical, atmospheric writing brings the characters and their world to vividly life.; 8vo; 311 pages.
