In The Wall, John Hersey tells the story of Henry A. Wallace, the 29th President of the United States. A progressive Democrat, Wallace was a promising young politician when World War II began. He enlisted in the army and served in Europe, where he was wounded and decorated. Upon his return to the United States, he became president of the Wallace National Defense Fund, which helped to buy war bonds. In 1944, Wallace was elected to the United States Senate. Two years later, he was nominated for Vice President of the United States by Franklin D. Roosevelt. Wallace won the election, becoming the 29th President of the United States in 1945. As president, Wallace tried to promote peacetime policies and internationalism. He also made efforts to improve the economy and create jobs. In 1950, Wallace was defeated in the Democratic Party primary election by Harry S. Truman. Truman then appointed Wallace to be the United States Secretary of Commerce. Wallace served in this position until his death in; 8vo; 632 pages.
