In the summer of 1964, on the cusp of his thirties, Alfred Coppel begins a journey from his childhood home in Vienna to the small town of34 East, in upstate New York. The town is situated on the edge of the Adirondack Mountains, and it is here that Alfred meets the people who will change his life - his eccentric, self-taught grandfather, the town librarian, the only black resident, and the women of the commune.

Alfred's grandfather is the only person in the town who remembers the days when the town was a thriving community. The town librarian tells Alfred of the town's history, and she shows him an old photograph of the town that was taken before it was destroyed by a fire. The women of the commune show Alfred their gardens and tell him about their lives.

Alfred begins to see the town in a different light, and he begins to understand the meaning behind; 8vo; 434 pages; $6.00.
