In 1802, Evergreen Gallant sets sail from England with a noblewoman and her daughter, seeking a new life in the new world. But when the ship is attacked by pirates, Gallant leads a daring rescue that earns him the admiration of the girl, who turns out to be the daughter of a wealthy plantation owner.

The two fall in love, but when the girl's father discovers their relationship, he orders her to return home. Gallant is devastated, but he follows her instructions and boards a ship headed back to England.

Upon his return, Gallant finds that the girl has married another man and has a child. Devastated, Gallant drinks himself into oblivion.
