In this tremendously moving and descriptive novel, the reader follows the day-by-day journey of a family as they travel from their home in the rural south to visit their relatives in the northern part of the country. The family is made up of the parents, their teenage son, and their infant daughter. The novel is replete with the sights, sounds, and smells of the country setting, and tells the story of the family's interactions with one another and with their relatives. The day-by-day unfolding of the story is punctuated by the family's thoughts as they make the journey. Ultimately, the journey is a sad one as the parents come to terms with their son's impending departure to the military and their daughter's impending entrance into grade school. However, the family's interactions and the descriptions of their surroundings make for a very enjoyable read.; 8vo; 343 pages.
