The English Civil Wars pitted the Royalists, or supporters of the monarchy, against the Parliamentarians, or supporters of the Parliament of England. The wars began with a series of Royalist uprisings, but they soon became a conflict between the two branches of the English government. The Royalists were initially successful, but they were eventually defeated by the Parliamentarians.
