In A Single Pebble, John Hersey tells the story of Henry DeTamble, a man who is slowly losing his mind. The story begins with DeTamble's return from World War II, where he was wounded in the leg. DeTamble is a shell of the man he once was, and his wife is worried about him. One day, DeTamble tells his wife that he's going to take a walk. When he doesn't return, his wife goes out looking for him, and she finds him lying on the ground, surrounded by pebbles. DeTamble tells her that he was walking when he saw a single pebble fall from the sky. He said that the pebble was so beautiful that he wanted to keep it, so he picked it up. But as he was holding it, he started to feel strange. He said that the pebble was talking to him, telling him that it was happy and that it wanted to be; 8vo; 181 pages.
