John Updike's novel, The Centaur, is the story of Harry Gold, a middle-aged man who is struggling to make a life for himself. Harry is a failed artist, and is currently unemployed. One day, he visits a psychiatric hospital, and meets a centaur named Chiron. Chiron tells Harry that he is a half-breed, and that he was once a great warrior. Chiron also tells Harry that he has a special gift, the ability to heal people. Harry decides to take Chiron up on his offer, and starts to travel around the country, healing people.; 8vo; 302 pages.
