The life and work of Victorian scholar, explorer, and adventurer, Dr. Francis Joseph Furnivall (1826-1898) is recounted in this book. Furnivall was born in England, and after completing his education, he traveled to India, where he met and married a woman from that country. He later moved to Australia, and in 1857, he traveled to Africa to study the slave trade. After his return, he began a distinguished career as a scholar and explorer, traveling to India, the Middle East, North Africa, the Americas, and the Pacific Islands. He is best known for his work on the British Museum's Turin Codex, a manuscript containing hieroglyphic and other ancient writing from Mexico.; 8vo; 302 pages.
