On May 21, 1961, President John F. Kennedy, Jr announced an ambitious initiative: the United States would send an American to the moon by the end of the decade. With the words, “We choose to go to the Moon,” President Kennedy launched a new era of exploration—and spurred our fascination with the “final frontier” of outer space.
