Robert Daley's Man with a Gun is the story of a young man, Virgil Tibbs, who is discharged from the Army after serving in Vietnam. Tibbs, now a veteran of the war, returns home to Oakland, California, and is unable to find a job or a place to live. Tibbs meets a man named Pootie, who tells him about a job opportunity that he has. Tibbs goes to the job interview, but is not hired. Tibbs goes to a bar and meets a woman named Mae, who tells him about a place where he can stay. Tibbs is then hired as a security guard at a warehouse. Tibbs is not happy with his new job, but he is able to make friends with the other security guards. One night, Tibbs is on duty at the warehouse when he is able to stop a robbery.
