This book is about a man, Jock, who is an ex-soldier and now a sheep herder in the Scottish Highlands. He is married to a woman, Elspeth, and they have two children, a boy and a girl. Jock is a peaceful man and lives a simple life with his family. One day, a man named Rory comes to the farm and tells Jock that he is a lion tamer and wants to buy Jock's sheep. Jock is hesitant to sell his sheep, but eventually agrees to sell them. Jock is not sure what he is getting himself into, but he is curious about what Rory is telling him.
