Ragland is the story of the Van Orsdells, a large and prosperous family in the early days of the American republic. The Van Orsdells are abolitionists and supporters of the Union cause in the Civil War. John Van Orsdell is the patriarch of the family and he leads his clan in support of the Union. He is also a shrewd businessman, and his efforts help the Van Orsdells prosper during the war. The family is torn apart by the war, however. John's son, Orin, joins the Union army and is killed in action. His wife, Laura, struggles to cope with the loss and raises their three young children alone. Laura's younger sister, Lizzie, also joins the army and becomes friends with Orin's widow. The two women fight side by side during the war, and afterward they help each other rebuild their lives.
