This book is about a young boy, Edward Payson, who is forced to leave his home in Colorado because of the Indian Wars. He is taken in by a family in Illinois, but is soon forced to leave again because of the Civil War. Edward eventually finds himself homeless and living on the streets of San Francisco, but he perseveres and eventually becomes successful.
