In 1876, the wealthy and powerful industrialist John Vanderlyn commissioned the architect Thomas U. Walter to build a colossal statue of Arcadia for his estate, Vanderlyn Park. The project quickly spiraled out of control, however, and Walter was forced to enlist the help of his friend, the artist E. Phillips Oppenheim. Together, they completed the statue in just nine months, using a staggering 1,000 tons of bronze and marble. The Colossus of Arcadia is now one of the most iconic and celebrated sculptures in the United States.; 8vo; 327 pages.
