In The Windsor Knot, McCrumb tells the story of a young girl growing up in the Appalachian Mountains during the 1940s. Maggie's father is a logger and her mother a housewife, and they are a hard-working family. Maggie is the fourth of six children and is the only girl. Maggie's brothers are much older than she is and often leave home to work in the logging industry. Maggie is a tomboy and loves to play with her brothers, but she is also interested in the traditional arts, such as quilting and crochet, and she dreams of one day becoming a great seamstress. When Maggie's older brother dies in a logging accident, Maggie is devastated and feels responsible. She begins to spend more time at home and helps her mother run the household. Maggie's mother is a kind and gentle woman, and she is grateful for Maggie's help. Maggie's older brother had been her role model, and she wants to make his death mean something.
