A handsome first edition/first printing in Fine condition in Very Fine dust-jacket. Minor soiling on top edges. Overall a tight, clean copy.

In this riveting, deeply personal novel, Joyce Carol Oates brings to life the powerful, dramatic experience of the winter solstice.

This is the story of two people, one young, the other old, who are both about to experience a solstice moment of their own. One is a mother trying to protect her young son from the dark powers that seem to be closing in on them; the other is a father estranged from his own children, who is about to find a way to connect with them.

As the sun descends below the horizon, the two characters struggle to find a way to connect with one another, and with the natural world around them. Oates masterfully weaves together the stories of these characters and the solstice itself into a powerful and evocative tale, exploring the connections between life and death, love and loss.; 8vo.
