Natsuo Kiryuu is an outcast high school student in Japan's rural Hokkaido prefecture. One day, he stumbles across a mysterious book in the school library. The book is called "N.P." and it is filled with strange drawings and writing. Natsuo can't help but be drawn to the book, and he starts to piece together the story of the book's author, Nanao. Nanao is a sickly young girl who lives with her parents and brother in a small rural town. She is a very lonely person, and she spends her days drawing and writing stories about a mysterious creature called N.P. Nanao's stories inspire Natsuo to start making friends and to try and find his place in the world. Natsuo's life takes a dramatic turn when he finds out that he has a rare blood disease that is slowly killing him. Natsuo starts to spend more and more time with Nana; 8vo.
