Pride is a novel by Wharton, set in upper-class Philadelphia in the early 1800s. The story revolves around the Bennetts, a wealthy family whose fortunes have fallen on hard times. The youngest daughter, Lydia, is in love with a man she believes is unworthy of her - a coal merchant named Hugh. When Hugh is killed in a carriage accident, Lydia is left heartbroken and her family is plunged into poverty.
