SIGNED by author John Updike on the limitation page in Fine publisher's slip case. From the collection of Betty Anderson, legendary art director of publisher Knopf in the late 20th century, as evidenced by her (small and unobtrusive) inventory number and signature.

Set in the early 1970's in the imaginary African nation of Kush, this novel is narrated tongue-in-cheek by exiled president, Colonel Hakim Félix Ellelloû who has a fanatic aversion to the United States. The US keeps creeping into Kush and the repercussions of this subversion constitute the violent events of the story.

John Updike

John Hoyer Updike (Mar. 18, 1932 - Jan. 27, 2009) was an American novelist, poet, short story writer and literary critic. Updike's most famous work is his Rabbit series with Rabbit is Rich and Rabbit at Rest receiving the Pulitzer Prize. Updike was widely recognized for his careful craftsmanship and prolific output, having published more than 20 novels and more than a dozen short story collections, as well as poetry, literary criticism and children's books.
