In Galatea 2.2, Powers uses a science fiction/fantasy setting to explore the idea of the human condition. In this future world, society is divided into two classes: the Elites and the Migrants. The Elites are a privileged group who live in a luxurious lifestyle while the Migrants live in poverty and are viewed as disposable.
The Elites are threatened by the Migrants because they are a threat to their power. The Migrants are a threat because they are a threat to their lives. The Elites try to control the Migrants through violence, but the Migrants keep fighting back.
Powers uses this world to explore the idea of the human condition. He asks questions like: what does it mean to be human? What is the value of life? What is the meaning of freedom?; 8vo.
