On a warm autumn evening, Mac, a barista at a small coffee shop in the town of Blackwater, is about to close up for the night. Mac's Place is a popular spot for locals to meet and chat, and even more so on a night like tonight, when the stars are out. As Mac locks the door for the last time, he notices a young woman walking down the street. She seems lost, and Mac decides to offer her a ride home.

The woman, Alice, is anxious and reluctant to accept Mac's offer, but she eventually agrees. As they drive, Alice tells Mac about her difficult life. She's been struggling to make ends meet since her parents died a few years ago, and she's been living with her older sister. Alice is tired of being alone and wants to find a way to make her life better.

Mac is sympathetic to Alice's plight, and he offers to help her as best he can. They stop; 8vo; FSA.
