As the war continued, American commanders realized that their troops were being killed or captured at an alarming rate. In response, the government created a secret program known as Operation Homecoming.

The aim of Operation Homecoming was to bring back as many American servicemen as possible. The program was controversial from the outset, as many Americans were opposed to the war. Nevertheless, the United States committed vast resources to the project, and by 1968, more than 5,000 soldiers had been rescued.
