This report summarizes the results of the Altar de Sacrificios excavations at Tres Zapotes, conducted by the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology in the 1970s. The site is a ceremonial center dating to the Late Formative period (c. 1200-700 BC). The excavations revealed a large, platform-style altar, measuring approximately 27 by 16 meters. The altar was oriented northwest-southeast, and was surrounded by an oval plaza with a diameter of approximately 10 meters. The central feature of the altar was a large, crescent-shaped stone sculpture, measuring 2.5 meters in height and 1.5 meters in width. A number of smaller, subsidiary sculptures were also found at the site. The altar was decorated with a variety of ceramic figurines and effigies, as well as with stelae and altars. The findings suggest that the site was used for religious ceremonies, and that it may have been the ceremonial; 4to; 85 pages; FSA.
