William of Orange, Count of Nassau, succeeded his father, the Duke of Orange, in 1584 and became ruler of the Netherlands. He led a Protestant rebellion against the Catholic Spanish rulers, and was successful in 1590. He became stadtholder of the Netherlands in 1598, and defended their independence against Spanish attacks. In 1648, he was arrested by the Republic of the United Netherlands and executed.; 8vo ; 240 pages.
