John Jay was born in 1745 to a prominent family in New York. He entered the legal profession in 1767 and quickly established himself as a leading lawyer and politician. In 1779, he was appointed the first Chief Justice of the United States. Jay was a key figure in the American Revolution and played a major role in the creation of the United States Constitution.
