The story follows the lives of two brothers, Ali and Hassan, as they grow up in a poor, rural town in Iran. The brothers are torn apart by the Iranian Revolution and the ensuing violence. Ali goes to the city to study and becomes a doctor, while Hassan is forced to stay in the town and work in the family's shop. Years later, Ali returns to the town and finds that everything has changed. The brothers are now estranged, and Ali has a daughter from a previous marriage. Hassan has also returned to the town, but is now a beggar.
